2022-2023 Course Delivery Formats

On-Campus Courses 

On-campus courses meet in their designated rooms on campus for the time indicated on the official schedule. Attendance is mandatory. If a student misses more than two sessions of an on-campus course, they will be automatically dropped from the course.

Hybrid Courses 

Hybrid courses combine online (Canvas) and face-to-face meetings (Gathering Days). Hybrid classes meet online for the first and the last four weeks of the term and meet in person during the fifth week of the quarter. Attendance is mandatory. Students are responsible for making travel and lodging arrangements to ensure their presence for all of the hours that are required on campus.

• Winter Quarter: February 6-11, 2023
• Spring Quarter: April 24-29, 2023

Online Courses

Online courses meet solely online, in synchronous or asynchronous time. Participation is mandatory.  If a student fails to participate in Canvas activities for two or more weeks (whether consecutive or not), they will be automatically dropped from the course.

Technology Expectations

It is the student’s responsibility to procure reliable, readily-accessible Internet service in order to fulfill the courses expectations. See Iliff technology and procedures. Support is available at [e-mail]. 

Distance Learning for MDIV and the United Methodist Church

The University Senate of the United Methodist Church guidelines state that candidates for ordination in The United Methodist Church cannot take all of their seminary classes online. The United Methodist seminaries are permitted to offer up to two-thirds of the Master of Divinity degree as distance education (as defined by 2012 Association of Theological Schools Standard ES.4), with one-third of the degree required to be campus-based.

Students earn 1.0 residential credit for each on-campus credit hour (i.e., a 4-credit on-campus course earns 4 residential credits). Students earn 1.0 residential credit for each hybrid course (i.e., a 2-credit or 4-credit hybrid course earns 1 residential credit). Students do not earn residential credits for online courses. 

First-Year Interdisciplinary Seminar, Internship Seminar, and IPVC earn 1.0 residential credit per credit hour regardless of delivery format (i.e., a 4-credit on-campus OR hybrid course earns 4 residential credits).

The Iliff School of Theology is in full compliance with the University Senate of the United Methodist Church and Iliff requires 40 of the 120 credits in a residential format.  It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that they are meeting the UMC residential requirements if they are seeking ordination.

Degree Program Standard A.3.1.3 requires at least one year of full-time academic study or its equivalent must be done in residence, which for Iliff equates to 40 of 120 credits required for the MDIV degree. In the Journey program, students have a multitude of avenues to meet this requirement including required on-campus intensives for face-to-face interactions with their instructors and peers.
