Some basic suggestions for making syllabi available in Canvas.
Canvas has an explicit Syllabus area in each course accessible through the left hand navigation. By default, all of our courses set the Syllabus page as the home page of the course, so it is the first thing students see when they access the course (you can change the home page of your course if you so choose). There are two main ways you can make a syllabus available in Canvas.
- Build syllabus in Canvas - All Iliff Canvas courses are created with a shell syllabus that offers suggestions for components to include (course description, objectives, course media, etc.) and a structure to begin with. See our Iliff Course Template for this shell syllabus. You can use this shell as a starting place or build your own pages in the course to communicate your syllabus. The IT department is happy to assist you in designing your syllabus on Canvas, so feel free to contact us at support@iliff.edu. Building the syllabus will contain 2 main parts, 1) editing the syllabus page and creating additional pages for the descriptive parts of your syllabus and 2) creating assignments that will build the course schedule with due dates and activity guidelines throughout each unit of the course. Building your syllabus is strongly encouraged for all online and hybrid courses.
- Post syllabus as document - If your course does not plan to use Canvas much during delivery, then you can simply upload your syllabus document to the course and link to this document in the syllabus area of the Canvas course. In order to allow Dean's Office access to your syllabus, you must link to your syllabus file on the syllabus page of the course.
