An endowed chair is a professorship for which full or partial funding of the salary and other defined benefits of the holder have been provided by funds held by the School. Endowed chairs are normally funded by individual(s) and carry the name(s) designated by the grantor. Such funds are invested by the School and the earnings from such funds are available for endowed purposes. In accepting such endowed funds the School has agreed to terms established by the grantor relating to the title of the endowed chair, the discipline, academic area, or field of study in which such chair is to be located and other specific terms regarding the qualifications of the individual named to hold the chair. The School may establish additional terms and conditions for the appointment to any endowed chair. Following the establishment of a chair, the internal appointment processes established in section III are followed.
Vacancies in an Established Position
- When an endowed position becomes vacant, the Faculty Personnel Committee, Dean or President will initiate the process of filling the position. The Faculty Personnel Committee, Dean, and President in consultation will review the terms of the endowment, the values of the donor, the academic discipline to which the position applies, the institutional needs including whether the search will be internal or open,. All terms and conditions for filling an endowed position will be established by the Faculty Personnel Committee, Dean, and President prior to the initiation of the search.
- If the position is to be filled by an internal candidate the Faculty Personnel Committee will consider all viable candidates in the discipline(s) among the ranked faculty, and bring a recommendation to the Faculty Council for approval. If approved by the Faculty Council, the recommendation will be forwarded to the Dean. The Dean forwards the Dean’s recommendation along with the Faculty Council recommendation to the President for action. The President reports his/her action on the recommendation to the Board. As with other appointment processes, if the President does not concur, s/he must report back to the Dean and Faculty Council as provided for in III.C.4.c.
- If the position is to be filled by an external candidate, normal search procedures will be followed as in section III.
Establishing and Making an Appointment to a New Endowed Position
- New endowed positions will be established by the Board following consultation among the Faculty Personnel Committee, the Faculty Council, the Dean, the President, and, when possible, prospective grantor(s). The Faculty Personnel Committee’s periodic review of the size and shape of the Faculty and the ensuing conversations with the Dean, the President and Board shall inform this process. The Curriculum Committee is consulted when the discipline is outside the bounds of the current curriculum and academic programming. Drawing upon all this material, the Faculty Personnel Committee, the Dean, and the President will agree upon the field, qualifications and other terms, and submit them to the Board for approval.
- If the position is to be filled by an external candidate, normal search procedures will be followed as in section III.
Criteria for Filling Faculty Endowed Positions
- The criteria for filling faculty endowed positions are the five criteria specified for the evaluation of faculty in section VIII. In addition, the terms of the endowment, the values of the donor, the academic discipline to which the position applies, the institutional needs, and the significance of the faculty member to his or her academic field(s) will be carefully considered.
- For both internal and external candidates the Faculty Personnel Committee will seek external reviews to determine the unique significance of the candidate in relation to his or her field(s) and will require a current vitae and self-evaluation. In addition, for internal candidates, the Faculty Personnel Committee will review teaching evaluations and past evaluations from the Dean and Faculty Personnel Committee, and evaluations from at least two Iliff faculty members.
